The End of Plastic Straws?

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BE GONE?

Now admittedly banning plastic straws in one country is only a small baby step on the plastic-free journey compared to the gigantic leap we as individuals and the world needs to do. But, thankfully the UK government has taken the step of strong step of banning the plastic straw. This will require brands to change by not using a straw in the first place, and at worst move to the next most environmental alternative. I’m gonna say it, but this is in fact positive government policies at work. Who would have thought it?

What is needed now is the confidence of applying this to other single-use plastics, with governments committing to such bans and lending the necessary support to brands and sustainable, practical alternatives. As time progresses we’re likely to see such bans extended in steps, starting with those where the impact to business is minimal, before hopefully expanding to the . There are also many other countries onboard with similar actions in place, let’s just hope they do it fast enough.

  •    We need usable and practical alternatives to encourage a change

  •    We need government intervention and commitment to eliminate single-use plastic, enacted policies to force the change

  •    We need your support to minimise your use of plastics and make sustainable changes.

THE RETURN OF THE PAPER STRAW

Over the past 50 years the use of the plastic straw grew massively as the worlds love for fast food and the increased need for convenience took centre stage, with the plastic straw a prime example of the worlds increasingly throw-away culture. However, the plastic straw has always had a more environmental alternative, our long-lost friend, yes, the paper straw. Although she’s never vanished we’ve seen her around more often in recent years since the extent of plastic waste in our oceans became more apparent. Now she may not have changed much in the 100 years plus, but does the same job as her plastic counterpart (though some would argue not as well), but more importantly without the environmental threat.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE A SUSTAINABLE CHANGE WITH REYO?

REMEMBER:

  • REDUCE – If you don’t need a straw, even if paper, don’t take one.

  • REPLACE – Use the most sustainable alternative

  • REUSE – Take your own cup or even your own reusable straw

  • RECYCLE – If you use paper, you can still recycle it!
